An Unfortunate and Lengthy Adventure in Misdiagnosis

The average mammoth weighed around 8 tons, or 16,000 lbs. Assuming for the sake of argument that:

  • 3/4ths of the entire mammoth was eaten or otherwise utilised
  • the mammoth was full-grown
  • that ice-age homo sapiens ate nothing but mammoth
  • that each homo sapiens would require up to 3 pounds of flesh per day (to provide 5,000 kcals, not unreasonable in the very cold environment)

It would take one tribe of 30 homo sapiens an absolute minimum of 133 days to eat one mammoth.

This would explain why archeologists complain about the ‘wasteful’ behaviour of humans and their habit of leaving half-eaten mammoth carcasses littered all around the Palaeolithic era.

Good thing they had a deep-freeze though.
